As temperatures begin to drop, homeowners need to prepare their homes for the colder weather approaching. Making these preparations in advance can help you avoid costly plumbing nightmares in the colder months. Our experts at Super Rooter have made this list of fall maintenance tips.
Disconnect the water hoses
If the hoses are left connected the water n the hoses can freeze and expand causing leaking faucets and connecting pipes that can potentially freeze and break.
Check the faucets
Make sure outside faucets and spigots are not leaking or dripping, if so, make the necessary repairs or call us to repair them for you. If the pipes are left to leak and freeze the water pressure builds up and causes them to crack.
Clear Gutter debris
Clear leaves and other debris from your gutters and downspouts to ensure proper function. Clogged gutters that don’t drain properly can cause water damage to occur inside your home, and cause expensive repairs.
Flush the water heater
Sediment build up in water heaters can cause corrosion, this shortens the life span of your water heater and reduces efficiency. Drain several gallons from the faucet located at the bottom of the tank or connect a hose directly to the tank and drain directly in a nearby drain. Also check the pressure relief valve of the tank. An over pressurized tank can cause major damage if not addressed.
Insulate pipes and seal leaks
Insulate pipes in unheated areas like garages or crawl spaces. Apply heat tape or thermostat controlled heat cables to prevent them from freezing and potentially breaking. Seal doors and windows that are are leaking to reduce cold air flow.
Inspect and clean your sump pump
Make sure your discharge line is clear of debris, and that your sump pump is working properly. Consider installing a back up system that is battery operated to protect your home from water damage in a power outage.
Have under ground sprinkler systems shut off by a professional
This will prevent them from freezing and breaking.
